A Story of Resilience and Hope: Zohaib Saleem’s Journey
Kot Radha Kishan, Pakistan — Zohaib Saleem, a 22-year-old brick kiln worker, faced unimaginable hardships under the oppressive rule of a ruthless kiln owner. His story, however, is not just one of suffering, but of incredible resilience, unwavering hope, and a family’s united fight against unimaginable oppression.
Zohaib and his family were ensnared in the brutal cycle of bonded labor by Mian Jameel, the owner of the brick kiln in Kot Radha Kishan. Despite their relentless hard work, the family received paltry wages and were prohibited from leaving, even for medical emergencies. In April 2024, they came to the harrowing realization of their illegal imprisonment.
In a courageous act, Zohaib’s mother, Perveen Bibi, fled to Faisalabad, seeking help. With the aid of Nadeem Masih, another brick kiln worker, she managed to bring her family to Faisalabad. However, the influential kiln owner, with the help of the police, recaptured Zohaib and took him back to Kot Radha Kishan.
Determined to rescue Zohaib, Nadeem Masih reached out to Atif Jameel, a compassionate attorney, and the Edge Foundation for financial support. They lodged FIR no 745/2024 under section 365B and filed a writ petition at the Lahore High Court. The court ordered Zohaib’s recovery, but the kiln owners denied holding him.
During his captivity, Zohaib was chained and kept in a basement in Bahria Town, Lahore, surviving on minimal food. Despite his dire circumstances, Zohaib’s faith kept him strong. One day, he miraculously broke free and reached a nearby Lahore exit point. An army man, seeing his condition, helped him return to Faisalabad.
In the last week of May 2024, Zohaib was joyfully reunited with his family in Faisalabad. Although their legal battle continues, the family is now safe, thanks to the relentless efforts of advocates and supporters.
Zohaib’s story sheds light on the brutal realities faced by brick kiln workers. They endure exploitation, receive poor wages, and suffer severe health issues due to unsafe working conditions. Advocate Atif Jameel stresses the urgent need for government intervention to uplift the lives of these workers, ensuring their rights and health are protected.
Our partners continue to support Zohaib and his family. Despite ongoing court battles and constant threats, their spirit remains unbroken. Their story stands as a powerful testament to the impact of community support and the resilience of the human spirit.
Zohaib and his family are not the only Christian family working under bondage. Many families like theirs find themselves trapped in a never-ending cycle of debt, with no hope for the future. Their loans never diminish, keeping them in a state of modern-day slavery. Let us pray for these families, that one day their bondage will end, allowing them to start anew with hope and freedom.
