Islamabad/Lahore, June 24, 2024 – In a significant legislative development, both the National Assembly and the Punjab Assembly have passed resolutions aimed at addressing the issue of mob lynching and enhancing the protection of minorities. The National Assembly approved its resolution on June 23, followed by the Punjab Assembly on June 24. These resolutions mark a pivotal step in combating violence and safeguarding the rights of religious minorities in Pakistan.

The newly passed resolutions call for stringent measures to prevent mob lynching and propose a robust framework to protect minority communities. This legislative action is intended to curb the misuse of blasphemy laws and prevent the unjust persecution of innocent individuals.

Nasir Saeed, Director of CLAAS-UK, commended the initiative, stating, “Taking such an initiative is a significant step in the current environment. At least politicians have started discussing this law in parliament, with Christian MPs being particularly supportive. I appreciate their courage and pray for them. CLAAS has been tirelessly working to stop the ongoing misuse of the blasphemy law, and this resolution is a beacon of hope. I hope that this discussion does not stop here but that politicians will strive to find solutions to stop the continuous misuse of the blasphemy law and to save innocent lives.”

Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, along with other key lawmakers, played a crucial role in advancing these resolutions. Their commitment to justice and human rights has been vital in securing broad support for these important measures.

The resolutions were championed by a diverse group of parliamentarians, including a significant number of Christian MPs who have been vocal advocates for minority protections. Their efforts have brought this critical issue to the forefront of legislative discussions.

The passing of these resolutions represents a collective acknowledgment of the urgent need to address mob violence and protect vulnerable communities. It sets a precedent for future legislative actions aimed at promoting justice and equality across the nation.

As these resolutions lay the groundwork for comprehensive legal reforms, there is hope that they will lead to concrete changes, ensuring that the rights of all citizens are respected and upheld. The onus now lies on the government and lawmakers to implement these resolutions effectively and work towards a more just and inclusive society.
